Health ISAC Wuhan Coronavirus Update – 0100 GMT 3 February 2020
CDC is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (named “2019-nCoV”) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and which continues to expand. Chinese health officials have reported thousands of infections with 2019-nCoV in China, with the virus reportedly spreading from person-to-person in many parts of that country. Infections with 2019-nCoV, most of them associated with travel from Wuhan, also are being reported in a growing number of international locations, including the United States. The United States reported the first confirmed instance of person-to-person spread with this virus on January 30, 2020.
Notable change:
First fatality recorded outside of Mainland China – (Philippines).

Travel Restriction Summary
- CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to China. In response to an outbreak of respiratory illness, Chinese officials have closed transport within and out of Wuhan and other cities in Hubei province, including buses, subways, trains, and the international airport. Additional restrictions and cancellations of events may occur.
- The US Department of State has issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory asking people not to travel to China due to the coronavirus outbreak.
- There is limited access to adequate medical care in affected areas.
- United, Delta and American Airlines announced they will suspend services to and from China, increasing the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on both travel and business.
- The 195 Americans who were evacuated from Wuhan to California have been quarantined as one person tried to flee.
DOD/HHS Interagency Response
HHS officials requested the Defense Department to provide several facilities capable of housing at least 250 people in individual rooms through Feb. 29, 2020 – 5 locations chosen:
- MCAS Miramar (California)
- Travis Air Force Base (California)
- the 168th Regiment, Regional Training Institute (Colorado)
- Lackland Air Force Base (Texas)
General Protection
Most often, spread from person-to-person happens among close contacts (about 6 feet). Person-to-person spread is thought to occur mainly via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. It’s currently unclear if a person can get 2019-nCoV by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.
